The dot SE country-code top-level domain extension was set up in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its introduction, the registration process was very restrictive, so a very limited number of domain names were reserved. Individuals could order no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was mandatory, i.e. only Swedish individuals, firms and organizations were able to order a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened significantly and, as a consequence, the number of .SE domains has been growing each year.
